Puck’s Fabrication Training Course

At Puck Enterprises, we know that our people are worth investing in. Fabrication Training Lead, John Martin created the Fabrication Training Program for new employees who may not have years of experience. The course was created to provide basic skills of welding and fabrication to welders who have less experience in fabrication.

During the program, John walks trainees through a step-by-step process to learn the welding/fabrication position at Puck. The program covers welding skills, tool usage, table usage, safety, overhead cranes, and internal computer usage needed on the job. This program guides someone with less experience to feel capable and confident in the trade. The welders can build on their welding knowledge during their time here at Puck.

The first group through the program was a young group of welders, which gave John an equal chance to learn from them. It was a good opportunity for the group to get some knowledge going into the trade and it gave John a chance to see how trainees would best learn. Three of the trainees shared with us about their experience. Joey Eickman's his favorite thing about the program was learning how to navigate the computer software needed for assignments and task information. Cody Girard learned how to be organized in his workspace and make sure it’s clean, so he’s very productive. For Devin Melby, the best part of the program was learning how to weld pipe.

John says that proper, well-rounded fabrication training is necessary to do well in the trade. “We’re not just sitting down and welding the same parts all the time. We’re constantly building things off of tables, jigs, and sawhorses,” said John. “With over 3,000 parts that we build, it’s not about having the knowledge of how to build something because you built it before. It’s about having the knowledge and ability to build something because you know how to fabricate. Those two things come from very different realms in the welding world.”

The first group of trainees has finished the Fabrication Training Program, with more training to come as needed. To learn about a Puck careers, see our open positions and join the Puck team.
