Environmental Safety

Fall can be a busy time for agriculture workers. The dragline application season tends to bring an increase in safety risks. Operational safety for custom applicators during the fall season can be improved with a few minor changes. Keep the risk of accidents on the job low by improving the environmental safety at your job site.

Every employee on the job should be aware of shutdown procedures and the thresholds that come with it. Crew members need to have the knowledge of what to do on the spot to avoid a bigger issue. That includes knowing who to call and when to make that call. Clear guidelines on when a supervisor is to be notified of a situation should be established before arriving at a job site.

If the authorities need to be notified, there may be a timeline before enforcement actions. However, stopping any flow or further damage should be the top priority. Automated pump control systems like LightSpeed can detect irregularities and shut down pumps within seconds of an event. The wireless controls enable users to power down pumps from a safe distance without approaching potential hazards.

If a catastrophic incident occurs, extra equipment may need to be brought to the site. This could include excavators, loaders, etc. We recommend a spill kit at each job site. This would contain important phone numbers, flags or flares, triangles, bales, pumps, shovels, shutoff valves, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit, plywood, and more.

Those who are conscious of the risks around them and have the knowledge to respond appropriately to those dangers can mitigate potential harm. Find an upcoming Pump School date to learn more about environmental safety, operation efficiency, and to talk with our experts and other applicators.
