Service Tips for Spring Pumping Prep

Warmer weather is around the corner, and everyone is eager to be back in the fields. As equipment comes out of cold storage, there are a few things to review before firing up.

  1. Make sure pumps connect to LightSpeed prior to pumping. If you notice connection issues before pumping, Puck can help find the solution before you’re stuck in the field.
  2. Make sure all functions work on pump units. Inspect your gates, outriggers, hydrostats, engine functions, etc.
  3. Check the 90° fitting of the pressure sensor on your pump bypass. The pressure sensor threads into the fitting, which should be packed with grease. This grease provides a medium between the manure and the pressure sensor to ensure the sensor isn’t touching the abrasive manure. Watch Luke talk more about this.
  4. All Cornell submersible pumps have 2 oil reservoirs in them, one for run dry, and one for the bearing cases. Check the sight glass or take out the drain plug to ensure they have clean, fresh oil in them. If manure is found in the oil reservoirs, it may be a sign that your mechanical seal is compromised. Watch this video for more information.
  5. Check the batteries on all units to make sure they are still in working order. Review our Tech Tip on batteries for more information.
  6. Make sure hose cart functions are working properly and greased. Fasteners on motor mounts should be tight. Sprockets on the motor should be directly in line with the sprockets on the domed reel end. If the sprockets are not lined up they could jump off, break, or cause other issues. Watch Luke's hose cart Tech Tip for more information.
